Dene Low’s Math Problems

Answers to The Entomological Tales of Augustus T. Percival Questions:
  1. 10
  2. All of them
  3. You should always be suspicious of how questions are asked, especially by math teachers who get a kick out of confusing their students. In this case, Petronella, Jane, and James all paid 10 shillings (3 x 10 = 30). The maitre d’hôtel kept 25 shillings to pay for the meal. That left 5 shillings for the waiter to work with when he gave each person 1 shilling change and kept 2 shillings for himself (3 + 2 = 5). So 25 + 5 = 30. The original amount paid by Petronella, Jane, and James was 30 shillings. Nothing is really missing. It’s that simple. The question is meant to confuse you by making you work with the 1 shilling change given to each person, Petronella, Jane, and James and the 2 shillings kept by the waiter. The confusing part is when the question goes into the absolutely useless information about 1 shilling change taken away from the 10 shillings originally paid meaning that each person really paid only 9 shillings and 9 x 3 = 27, which has nothing to do with the original question. If you want to be a detective, always make sure the original question is being answered and not something that has nothing to do with what is being asked.
  4. Because all prime numbers end in odd numbers. If you add two odd numbers, you get an even number and all even numbers can be divided by 2, so the numbers that are the result of adding prime numbers cannot be prime numbers.
