Dene Low’s Math Problems

From the Series The Entomological Tales of Augustus T. Percival:
  1. How many people were kidnapped in the first book?
  2. In the first book, how many kidnapped people did Petronella save?
  3. Petronella, Jane, and James go to a restaurant. They each pay 10 shillings to the waiter to give to the maitre d’hôtel for their meal. The maitre d’hôtel gives their waiter 5 shillings as change to give back to Petronella, Jane, and James and cover the waiter’s tip. The waiter cannot divide 5 equally by 3, so the waiter gives each 1 shilling and keeps 2 shillings as a tip. If Petronella, Jane, and James each got back 1 shilling and gave 10 shillings, then they really gave 9 shillings (10 – 1 = 9). If you times 9 x 3 = 27. The waiter kept 2 shillings, so 2 + 27 = 29. But they each gave 10 shillings and 3 x 10 = 30. So what happened to the missing shilling?
  4. Why is it that if you add two different prime numbers, you never get a prime number?
