Because of his Japanese language skills, eighteen-year-old Ryujin Shimazu, is recruited to be a translator in the Pacific theater of World War II. For his own safety, he is assigned a white American soldier bodyguard. Having someone with him at all times complicates life because Ryujin is a shape-shifting dragon who needs his privacy to use his powers to further American victory in such battles as the battle of Guadalcanal. Life is also complicated by the realization that the people who are trying to kill him are part of his heritage.
