Turmoil threatens the people of the Topaz internment camp during World War II, where eighteen-year-old Ryujin Shimazu is a prisoner, because the U. S. government is asking for volunteers to join the Army. Many internees scoff at the idea of helping a government that has made them prisoners and taken their belongings, but others believe that the way to be released is to prove that they are patriotic and useful to the war effort. Ryujin volunteers and is sent to Europe with the 442^nd where he uses his unique powers in battle, and especially in the rescue of a Texas unit caught behind German lines.
